He is sometimes called a classic goalkeeper – he is strong on the line and in one-on-one situations, has strong reflexes and reactions like his role model Oliver Kahn once did. Especially under pressure he blooms.
We conducted a short interview with Christian Mathenia. He talks about the perfect game, motivation and his goalkeeper gloves.
Hi Christian, what is a perfect game for you?
When we have won as a team and I have put in a good performance. As a goalkeeper a perfect game is for me when we have won with no goal scored by the oppenets.
What does a penalty mean to you?
It is a curse for the team but a huge opportunity for the goalkeeper to create something great out of an almost impossible situation. As a goalkeeper you have the chance to hold the penalty and give something back to the team.
How do you motivate yourself for a game?
I think it is something special to be able to play in the second Bundesliga and to have this privilege to play here. Accordingly, I do not need any special preparation. I am already automatically motivated because I just think it is awesome to play in the second league.
What is most important to you about your glove?
The grip is the most important thing for me. The grip has to work very well in wet weather aswell. I have worn uhlsport my whole career, even as a small child I played with uhlsport goalkeeper gloves. I think that uhlsport is the best brand at the goalkeeper glove market and accordingly I am happy to wear uhlsport.
