Statistically, Ron-Robert Zieler is the undisputed leader in Bundesliga history: Nobody has completed more games than him.
At 16 it was already foreseeable that the Cologne-born was heading toward a successful professional career. Also manager legend Sir Alex Ferguson noticed that. And today, Ron is a World Champion.
We had a short interview with Ron-Robert Zieler. He talks about the goalkeeping game, what it means to be a team player and about his goalkeeper gloves.
Hi Ron, why did you become a goalkeeper?
Good question. In the past we did not have anyone else who wanted to be a goalkeeper and because I enjoyed it immensely. After some time I was able to catch some unexpected balls and then it was clear: I am staying in goal.
What does it mean for you to be a team player?
For me, being a team player means treating each other with respect, pursuing a common goal and putting the team concept in the foreground; ultimately, that is the only way to be successful.
How can you influence the game from your position?
First and foremost through good saves, but of course also through communication. Nevertheless, I always say: a goalkeeper must first and foremost do his job, because that’s when he helps the team the most, and beyond that, of course, you can also take on leadership qualities.
What was the best moment in your career as a goalkeeper?
It is incredibly difficult to point out one moment. I have had a lot of great moments, primarily the victories and good games that stick in your mind, where you really played a big part in the success or victory. But in our profession, of course, there are also bad games and moments that remain in the memory. But the good moments are always in the foreground, of course.
What is most important to you about your glove?
For me, the most important thing about my glove is that it has good grip and a good fit. I have to be able to rely 100% on my gloves to have the confidence to catch the ball at the right moment. All these factors are present in my ABSOLUTGRIP FINGER SURROUND.
